Sometimes, over-the-counter treatments aren’t enough—especially when baby’s eczema becomes severe or infected. A dermatologist can provide additional care, guidance, and prescription treatments.

We saw Dr. Sunny Chun at SKC Dermatology, who prescribed us a topical steroid for Evan’s weepy skin (oozing, yellow crusting). Within days, we saw incredible improvement—his skin was clearer than it had been in weeks.
At first, I hesitated to use steroids. I wanted to do what I thought was “best” for him, and I worried about long-term effects. But after seeing the quick relief it brought, I realized my hesitation may have caused him more discomfort than necessary. That realization brought some mom guilt—but also complete relief. I was so happy to see my clear skinned baby.
One of the most helpful tips we received came from Dr. Sunny Chun, and it totally changed our routine:
Bathe your baby every day.
This helps remove bacteria and allergens from the skin that could worsen eczema or cause infection—especially when the skin is open, raw, or weepy (a sign of potential infection).
Bathing Tips for Eczema-Prone Skin:
- Use lukewarm water (not hot)
- Limit bath time to less than 10 minutes
- Use gentle, fragrance-free cleansers (no bubbles or harsh soaps)
- Pat skin dry with a soft towel—don’t rub! Rubbing irritates the skin and can trigger itching.
- Apply moisturizer or prescribed treatment within 3 minutes of the bath. This locks in moisture and helps prevent flare-ups.
For us, this simple practice helped so much. Even though it felt counterintuitive to bathe him more often at first, it made a huge difference in reducing irritation and keeping his skin clear of infection.
Pro Tip: Get a Referral!
- Our primary doctor, Baker Health, got us an appointment fairly quickly after the consultation. When I had tried calling SKC Dermatology on my own (before our consultation with Baker Health), they told me the earliest appointment would be the following week.
Other Dermatologists I considered:
- Pediatric and Adolescent Dermatology Center, Emily M Berger, MD (650 From Road, Suite 470, Paramus, NJ)
- One in NYC that was recommended to me by another mommy friend who had children with severe eczema; the earliest appointment I could get was 6 months later. I still made the appointment if, God forbid, we were still dealing with this issue then.
